Election night in the USA… The Dutch broadcast system is going all out with live broadcasts from that will go on until 0900 hours tomorrow morning. Normally I’d stay up to get a bit of it, but tonight I will give it a miss, I think.
I fully expect to wake up tomorrow morning and find that the world has taken a sharp turn to the left, politically as well as metaphorically. Obama will be president and it will be an unmitigated disaster, not just for the US, but for the entire free West. At least, that is what it feels like.
Even before the first real results need to come in, there are signs that the good ol’ US is heading down a path that will make Europe regret the massive the support it has given The One. Michelle is reporting a likely return of the Fairness Doctrine, a principle (anything but fair) that will force right wing broadcasters to offset their opinions with liberal ones (but not the reverse). Jammie Wearing Fool has a video of a top Democrat telling us that keeping ones own money is a ‘simplistic notion’. And it seems that The One has promised East Jerusalem to leader of Fatah Abbas, rewarding a 60 year long terror campaign.
And if that weren’t enough, here’s Michelle again, reporting on the appearance of a self-styled ‘civil defence force’ at a polling station in Philadelphia, black outfit, baton and all. A Brave New World, indeed…
Since a country is so dependent on its economy for the welfare of its citizens, it will be interesting to watch the Dow tomorrow. If it resumes the slide of the last weeks, I will not be surprised.
[UPDATE001] Gagdad Bob isn’t mincing his words:
In short, its end is in its beginning, as the poet said. The higher it ascends in its intoxicated reach for power, the further it will fall. The concrete fact of Obama shall soon enough kill the vaporous idea of Obama.
Undoubtedly correct, but at what cost to the rest of us?
[UPDATE002] On the Dutch 8 o’clock news tonight: Obama will win because his message of Hope and Change is so crystal clear, whereas McCains’ isn’t. Come again? The One is all over Hope and Change, but he forgot to tell us one or detail tinsy details: Hope for what? Change into what?
It has been downhill ever since the Obama nomination for the institute that is the Dutch NOS 8 o’clock news, but after tonight, after that vapid, partisan quote I will never again be able to take the 8 o’clock news seriously. Sic transit gloria mundi, I guess.
[UPDATE003] Helen of EU Referendum thinks along similar lines as yours truly, but is a bit more optimistic about the long term.
[UPDATE004] There it is: Dow shows the biggest post-election drop in history.
